What is Bone Grafting?
Your jawbone is very important to your overall dental health. If your jawbone is weak from missing teeth or physical trauma, you may need to get bone grafting. This will allow your jaw to securely fit and hold dental implants. A bone graft will help build up your jawbone so it's healthy enough to support an implant. At KFA Dental Excellence, this surgery is offered to strengthen your mouth for subsequent dental implant surgery to replace missing or weak teeth. "I met Dr. Ferrari and her staff in July of 2021 for a pretty complicated issue that I was terrified of having done. From the minute I stepped into the office, I was at put at ease. The staff truly gives the Ritz Carlton experience to each and every person that walks in. Once you are escorted to the treatment room, from the second you sit in the chair until you walk out, my comfort was always the main priority. Like many, going to the dentist was not my favorite thing to do, but the second I met Dr. Ferrari, I knew all of my fears and anxieties would vanish. She is truly the most kind, caring, professional, medical professional I have ever seen. I have been going to her monthly for almost a year now and I must admit, I look forward to each visit. Not once have I ever experienced a bit of discomfort during or after any of my treatments. The follow up calls and texts from either Dr. Ferrari or her staff to check in on me are also a welcomed bit of excellence in the days of automated calls or just being a number. 5 stars are not enough for KFA Dental. With the highest regards, Carrie Marone ⭐️"- C.S. / Facebook / May 04, 2022

"I have been a patient of KFA Dental for over three decades. I LOVE KFA Dental, Dr. Angela Ferrari and my hygienist, Melissa. I know that that sounds strange but it's 100% true. The entire staff are the nicest group of people you could ever hope to meet and always make you feel welcome and well cared for. They are always up to date on the latest technology and truly care about how you feel both during and after whatever procedure it is that you're having done. I have and will continue to recommend KFA Dental to anyone and everyone who is looking for a new dentist. I actually look forward to my visits."- D.R. / Google / Apr 15, 2022

"I have never experienced a dentist like KFA, the whole team is by far the best. I love their text messaging system for follow-up, or when you need an appointment, with immediate response during business hours. I’ve never had a bad experience with anyone on the team. Every cleaning I have had these past few years, has always been nothing but great. Each of the hygienists have always been very accommodating to my phobia of going to the dentist, they have made each experience exceptional. Recently, I had my 3rd root canal preformed and Dr. Lewis. This has been by far the best “pain free” root canal I’ve had done. I wish I knew about KFA for my two previous root canals. Highly recommended."- G.S. / Google / Mar 31, 2022
Do I Need Bone Grafting?
Some oral conditions, like gum disease, or a physical trauma to your mouth can cause a weakened jaw. Atrophy can also weaken the jawbone if a tooth was missing, and it wasn't treated or replaced with removable dentures or a cemented bridge. Bone grafting strengthens the jaw and prepares it for a dental implant. It's important to keep in mind that every day you have missing teeth is a day that bone loss occurs so the sooner you can come in, the better. Bone grafting can take several months to heal, but the result is a stronger jaw that will support your dental implant and your natural teeth to give you a healthier mouth and glowing smile.
How Does Bone Grafting Work?
The process of your bone grafting procedure will depend on where the graft comes from and how much grafting is needed. During your consultative appointment, one of our highly skilled dentists will discuss your grafting options and help you select the best plan. Some different options include:
Autograft: Bone is removed from one area of your body, such as the shin, hip, or chin.
Allograft: Bone is harvested from another person.
Xenograft: Bone is taken from an animal, generally a cow.
Alloplast: Synthetic bone may also be used.
As soon as the bone graft is ready to be placed, we will use local anesthesia to numb the areas being treated and place an incision in the gum tissue to reveal the bone. Your prepared graft will be attached to your bone. Proteins and collagen will also be attached as a way to encourage the graft to attach and grow. The gum tissue will be stitched closed and the area will be cleaned.
What is the Recovery Process for a Bone Graft?
In the next 6 – 9 months, your graft should heal. We may prescribe pain medication or antibiotics for any inflammation or discomfort after the bone graft. Within this timeframe, your home oral care routine with flossing and brushing along with any additional products suggested by our dentists are very important. We will schedule follow-up appointments at KFA Dental Excellence to check in with you and review your healing progress; this will help us to determine when you are ready for the dental implant process. Once we decide you're ready for your implants, we'll schedule your appointment with one of our dentists.
