What are 3D Impressions?
Getting impressions of your teeth used to be a long, and at times, uncomfortable process. Physical impressions require you to bite into a mold for extended periods of time, which can be uncomfortable and is problematic for patients with a strong gag reflex. That is the reason why our team at KFA Dental Excellence is pleased to provide a modern alternative to physical molds with 3D impressions. Utilizing the innovative technology of intraoral cameras, 3D impressions take an exact scan of your mouth. This makes it possible for our dentists to create an accurate model of your mouth that may be utilized to create dental restorations, like crowns, implants, inlays and onlays, dentures, and more.
"I met Dr. Ferrari and her staff in July of 2021 for a pretty complicated issue that I was terrified of having done. From the minute I stepped into the office, I was at put at ease. The staff truly gives the Ritz Carlton experience to each and every person that walks in. Once you are escorted to the treatment room, from the second you sit in the chair until you walk out, my comfort was always the main priority. Like many, going to the dentist was not my favorite thing to do, but the second I met Dr. Ferrari, I knew all of my fears and anxieties would vanish. She is truly the most kind, caring, professional, medical professional I have ever seen. I have been going to her monthly for almost a year now and I must admit, I look forward to each visit. Not once have I ever experienced a bit of discomfort during or after any of my treatments. The follow up calls and texts from either Dr. Ferrari or her staff to check in on me are also a welcomed bit of excellence in the days of automated calls or just being a number. 5 stars are not enough for KFA Dental. With the highest regards, Carrie Marone ⭐️"- C.S. / Facebook / May 04, 2022

"I have been a patient of KFA Dental for over three decades. I LOVE KFA Dental, Dr. Angela Ferrari and my hygienist, Melissa. I know that that sounds strange but it's 100% true. The entire staff are the nicest group of people you could ever hope to meet and always make you feel welcome and well cared for. They are always up to date on the latest technology and truly care about how you feel both during and after whatever procedure it is that you're having done. I have and will continue to recommend KFA Dental to anyone and everyone who is looking for a new dentist. I actually look forward to my visits."- D.R. / Google / Apr 15, 2022

"I have never experienced a dentist like KFA, the whole team is by far the best. I love their text messaging system for follow-up, or when you need an appointment, with immediate response during business hours. I’ve never had a bad experience with anyone on the team. Every cleaning I have had these past few years, has always been nothing but great. Each of the hygienists have always been very accommodating to my phobia of going to the dentist, they have made each experience exceptional. Recently, I had my 3rd root canal preformed and Dr. Lewis. This has been by far the best “pain free” root canal I’ve had done. I wish I knew about KFA for my two previous root canals. Highly recommended."- G.S. / Google / Mar 31, 2022
Can I Get 3D Impressions?
3D impressions are great for patients of all ages that have a sensitive gag reflex and/or people who wish to avoid the stress of physical impressions. KFA Dental Excellence employs 3D impressions in case you need a custom restoration (crown, bridge, inlay, onlay, denture), or even removable aligners (such as Invisalign). 3D impressions are ideal because they create precise digital versions of your mouth that can be sent straight to a dental lab or our in-office CEREC machine.
What Can I Expect with 3D Impressions?
During this process, you will sit in one of our comfortable treatment chairs while one of our skilled dentists passes a small scanning wand around your mouth. This tool uses safe wavelengths to capture all the different areas of your teeth and mouth. Once we complete the scan, a model of your teeth will soon show up on the screen. If any areas were missed during the first scan, we will simply re-scan the necessary areas, as opposed to physical molds that would require the whole procedure to be redone. This process eliminates the uncomfortable process of physical molds and is performed much quicker.
Will I Need to Have a Follow-Up After my 3D Impressions?
After your 3D impression scans have been completed, they'll be sent to our in-office CEREC system for review. As soon as your orthodontic or restoration treatment has been made from your scans, Dr. Kahn, Dr. Ferrari, Dr. Aldieri, or one of their skilled associates will be able to finish your treatment. Your scans will be kept on file. This can make it easier for our dentists to compare your results over time and if you need future restoration treatment. Nothing further should be needed from you in regard to your 3D scans until one of our dentists feel it's appropriate to get new scans.
3D Impressions FAQ
Are 3D impressions safe?
Absolutely. The digital scanners used to make the 3D impressions are completely safe and don't emit any type of harmful radiation.
What’s the difference between 3D impressions and traditional dental impressions?
A 3D impression, or digital impression, uses a scanner to scan your teeth then uploads that image into specialized software to make a highly accurate model of your teeth. Traditional dental impressions require you to bite into a tray filled with putty. This alginate putty has to harden. Then you have a mold of your teeth.
Do 3D impressions hurt?
Not at all. The main advantage of digital impressions is that they’re simple, quick, easy, and completely painless.
